Steers on road again

September 15, 2011

This week, the Big Spring Steers will make the trip west to face the Monahans Loboes. Coach Phillip Ritchey's scrappy bunch will be looking for their first win of the year against a historically strong squad.

In last week's game against Plainview, Coach Ritchey turned quarterback Garrett Stuteville loose for the first time this season and as a result, the Steers threw the ball for more yards in the one game than the two previous games combined. The points on the scoreboard told the same story as Big Spring put up a season-high 16 points and were a few fine-tunable mistakes away from registering even more.

On the other side of the field sits Monahans. Last week, Monahans lost to Midland Christian in a close 20-15 defensive battle. This was the first regular season loss by the Loboes since November of 2008.

Primarily a running team, Monahans will most likely stick to their core philosophy of running over teams with their two main running backs, each of whom is averaging over 100 yards per game.

This will present a challenge for the big defensive line of Big Spring. Devin Roberson, Noah Lozano and Lukas Falcon are leading the Steers in tackles, though Chris Nunez and Diamond Bailey are right behind them, along with Max Pappajohn and Isaac Garza.

Though the Steers are still averaging under 10 points per game, last week's action showed a completely different offensive attack, one that complimented Big Spring's quarterback well. Stuteville threw for just under 200 yards in the game, scoring two touchdowns in the air. More of the same may be just what the doctor ordered.
