Steers' season ends at Snyder's hands, 41-0

November 6, 2010

Big Spring quarterback DaVonte Anderson returns a kickoff during the Steers' 41-0 loss to Snyder.

Big Spring senior defensive tackle Pernell Parker, usually a man of few words, didn't have much analysis on the Steers' 41-0 loss to Snyder Friday at Memorial Stadium.

The better team won and for 48 minutes, Snyder proved it.
“They gave it 100 percent every play and never quit,” an emotional Parker said. “We couldn't step up to the plate.”

In a matter of minutes, it became apparent that the odds Big Spring had to overcome to get into the playoffs against Snyder were just too much to ask for.

The Steers had to beat Snyder by at least 13 points for a playoff berth, but as the Tigers continued to roll, time started to run out on
Big Spring's season.

Snyder jumped on Big Spring early, courtesy of a 2-yard and 5-yard touchdown run from the Tigers' Brandon Davis. After the first Davis touchdown, on the first play of Big Spring's first offensive possession, Steers quarterback DaVonte Anderson fumbled the ball and Snyder returned it close to the goaline. That set up the 5-yard run from Davis and in an instant, Big Spring was down two scores.

Looking at the statistics, Snyder's No. 1 offensive weapon in quarterback Kennan Ward didn't have much of an impact running the ball, something head coach Phillip Ritchey pointed out he does well. He had five carries for 52 yards, but he did complete 10-of-14 passes for 144 yards and a touchdown.

“Nobody's stopped him all year long,” Ritchey said. “Even in the Brownwood game, they were in that game for a long time. They're going to be a hard team to stop in the playoffs. Any time you have a guy who can make those plays and the receivers and the running backs they've got. They're line is just good enough to give them the daylight they need.”
