Still time to take advantage of tax aid program

March 19, 2011

Time is running out for area residents looking to take advantage of the annual AARP Tax-Aide program, as the April 18 deadline to file looms on the horizon.

Many area taxpayers were unable to get a jump on their filings efforts this year because of an Internal Revenue Service glitch that prevented those filing itemized returns from filing until February. However, the wait could pay off for some area residents.

In addition to extending several older tax deductions for 2010, the Tax Relief Unemployment Insurance Reauthorization and Job Creation Act also extended those deductions for 2011 and a number of other tax deductions and credits for 2011 and 2012, such as the American Opportunity Tax Credit and the modified Child Tax Credit, which help families pay for college and other child-related expenses.
