Student numbers down a bit at HC; not unexpected

October 29, 2013

While implementation of a three-phase plan to enhance the dental hygiene program at Howard College dominated trustees’ attention Monday, the board addressed other issues as well, including enrollment.

Student enrollment is down 9 percent district wide, said college officials, who presented certified fall enrollment numbers. Contact hours — numbers the state uses to determine funding — Big Spring, Lamesa and San Angelo campus saw an 11 percent drop while the SouthWest Institute for the Deaf showed a 3 percent increase.

This drop comes at the heels of several record-breaking enrollment years beginning in fall of 2009, added college President Dr. Cheryl Sparks.
