Superintendent contract, pay raises on trustees' agenda

Big Spring public school trustees will revisit Superintendent Steven Saldivar's contract situation when they hold their monthly meeting at 5:30 p.m. Thursday in the high school board room.

Trustees raised some eyebrows in June when they declined without comment to extend Saldivar's contract following their annual evaluation of his job performance. The non-action was notable because it is standard operating procedure for school boards to add at least one year to a superintendent's contract following a satisfactory evaluation.

Saldivar's contract, which currently runs through June 30, 2014, includes an annual base salary of $131,000.

Other money matters on Thursday's agenda include discussion of possible pay ranges for school district employees.

Debbie Green, business manager for Big Spring Independent School District, said officials are considering a 3 percent from midpoint raise for all employees this coming fiscal year which would cost the district about $650,000, but are keeping their options open.

“(Trustees) may have other options they want us to explore,” Green said. “Either way, it's to a point where we need to start firming things up.”

The clock is indeed ticking for instituting a pay raise — the district has little more than a month before trustees must approve a new budget.

In other business Thursday, trustees will consider:

• Updated legal and local policies.
• Approval of the Howard County Tax Appraisal District's budget.
• Employment recommendations.
