Suspect arrested in BSHS bomb scare

December 19, 2012

A Big Spring man was arrested Tuesday afternoon and charged with making a terroristic threat in connection with the Monday morning bomb threat at the Big Spring High School.

Jordan Weston Hamilton, 24, of 1007 E. 15th St., was arrested and charged with terroristic threat – placing public in fear of serious bodily injury. As of the time of this report, Hamilton was being held in the custody of the Howard County Detention Center awaiting arraignment.

According to Sgt. Tony Everett, public information officer for the Big Spring Police Department, Hamilton has confessed to making the call that caused the high school to be evacuated Monday.

“Investigators with the BSPD Street Crimes Unit arrested Hamilton,” Everett said. “The suspect confessed to the offense, however, as of this time he has not offered any motive.”

According to Everett, the bomb threat was received Monday at 9:52 a.m. by local law enforcement dispatch.

“Dispatch received a 911 call from a male subject who claimed there was a bomb in the high school,” Everett said. “School officials were immediately notified and the building was evacuated. Officers responded to the scene and conducted a search of the premises.”

No bomb or device was found, according to Everett, and students and school faculty were sent back to their classes after approximately 40 minutes.

Everett said the call was made using a “dead” cell phone.

“A cell phone that is not activated or doesn't currently have service from the carrier can still dial 911,” Everett said. “These pre-paid cell phones we toss in the trash can be dug out by someone, charged up and used to dial 911.”
