Technology updates topic for Coahoma trustees

November 18, 2010

Coahoma ISD trustees will hear a report on recent technology upgrades when they meet at 7 p.m. tonight in the administration board room.

COAHOMA — School trustees here will receive a report on the state of the district's technology upgrades when they hold their regular monthly meeting at 7 p.m. tonight in the administration building board room.

One of the many upgrades Coahoma Independent School District made during its $13 million renovation was to update classroom technology. But, as CISD Superintendent Randy Brown said, it's one thing to have the technology, it's another to know how to use it effectively.

To that end, CISD is making a major push to make sure teachers and other staff know how to make the best use out of innovations such as the Smart Board, a high-tech version of the traditional classroom chalk board.
“We're emphasizing staff development along these lines,” Brown said. “(District Technology Director) Odis Franklin and his committee have identified some needs as far as staff development goes.

“I think we've done a good job of putting technology in teachers' hands,” Brown added. “We now have a Smart Board in every classroom, and the teachers are willing to use them. But we do have a need for training, not just on Smart Boards, but other forms of classroom technology as well.

Use of technology in the classroom has exploded in recent years, and Brown does not see that trend slowing down anytime soon.
