Thank you, parade participants
We’d like to take a few moments to say thank you to those individuals, businesses and groups who helped make the Big Spring Herald Lighted Community Christmas Parade something of which we can all be proud. We’ll not mention anyone specifically because it takes literally a hundred or more people to pull it off and make sure everything goes as smoothly as possible. We begin weeks in advance, contacting various businesses for the temporary use of vehicles for the grand marshal and other dignitaries, Santa and Mrs. Claus and our workers, who have to be able to scoot from one end of the parade to the other in a matter of minutes. It takes a huge effort from the Big Spring Fire Department, Police Department and Citizens Police Academy Alumni Association as well as the city of Big Spring, Howard County and the Texas Department of Transportation.Coordination is paramount, especially when you block off the main north-south artery through Big Spring — a move which, and you are not going to believe this, brings out the grinch in a few people. The government entities work with us very closely to make sure that the parade not only comes off with as few hitches as possible, but is done so in as safe a manner as possible. Our thanks go out to all of those who participate in this annual event. We have very creative people in our community, and some of the floats you witnessed Saturday night were an example of what they can accomplish. But whether you toiled for hours constructing a float or simply donned a Christmas hat and walked the route, we appreciate your participation. Without you, this parade would never happen. In a few days, our parade committee will be meeting to rehash the 2010 event and begin making plans for 2011. If you have a suggestion or idea on how to make the lighted community parade better, e-mail us at firstname.lastname@example.org or drop us a note at our office on Scurry Street.Once again, everyone, from the Big Spring Herald to you, thanks for your help and have a very merry Christmas.
