Thomas Anthony â€śHampâ€ť Burcham, 89, of Big Spring, passed away on Thursday, Aug. 18, 2011, in a local hospital. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., Monday, Aug. 22, 2011, at the Nalley-Pickle & Welch Rosewood Chapel with Gary Plew and Charlie Ackerson officiating. Interment will follow at Trinity Memorial Park.
There will be a visitation for family and friends from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 21, 2011, at the funeral home.
Hamp was born on Aug. 14,1922, in Hico to Jesse and Mary Burcham. Their famiy moved to Big Spring in 1942 and Hamp started working for T&P Railroad as a yardman, a position he held for 19 years. In 1943, while on a visit to his prior hometown of Hico, he stopped by an orchard to gather some pecans and saw a classmate he had gone to school with since grade school. She stole his heart and he married Dollie Orena Green on April 16, 1945, in Stephenville. After the railroad job, he managed a service station for Sinclair Oil and later worked for Bollinger Grocery. He loved working on lawmowers and other small engines.
Survivors include his wife, Dollie; son, Raymond Burcham and wife Kathy of San Angelo; daughter, Kay Rawls and husband Dean of Big Spring; son Butch Burcham and wife Corky of Big Spring; brother Louis Burcham and Betty of Brownwood; sister, Loyce Jones of Big Spring; sister-in-law, Jewel Burcham of Big Spring; his grandchildren; great-grandchildren; great great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews and many dear friends who are considered family, including Gina Shelby, who spent many hours daily for several years taking care of Hamp.
Hamp was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, J. L. Burcham, Alfred Burcham and Phillip Burcham and one granddaughter, Dena Hawkins.
Pallbearers will be Chad Averette, Mike Averette, Randall Burcham, Steven Clayton, Colton Hawkins, Curtis Hawkins, Ransom Rawls, Tommy Rawls and Gene Wooldridge.
