A time of good cheer, but also to beware

Santa won’t be the only one making a list and checking it twice this season, as local law enforcement officials warn residents to be extra-vigilant against burglars and other criminals looking to cash in on the holiday.

According to officials with the Big Spring Police Department, the number of reports of burglary of a habitation increase during the holiday season, as criminals look to fill their stockings with other people’s gifts.

“We generally see an increase in the number of burglaries during Christmas,” Sgt. Tony Everett, public information officer with the BSPD, said. “Criminals know shoppers are out there buying gifts for their loved ones, and they have no problem with breaking into a home or a car to make away with those items."
