Tuesday roundup: Buffs rout Denver City

April 13, 2011

DENVER CITY — The Forsan Buffaloes broke open a tight game in the fifth inning to claim an 18-5 win over Denver City in District 3-2A baseball action Tuesday.

The Buffs were clinging to a 6-5 lead in the fifth before they exploded for 12 runs, powered in large part by Foster Burchett's grand slam home run, to end the game via the mercy rule.

Burchett went 3-for-3 at the plate with five RBI, while his brother Trevor was 2-for-4 with three RBI. Zane Herrin also had a good day at the plate, going 3-for-4 while driving in two runs.

Peyton Parker picked up the win, going 4-and-a-third innings for Forsan, which improved to 16-4 overall and 6-3 in district play.

“We swung the bat really, really well Tuesday,” Forsan Head Coach Jason Phillips said. “The last two games, we've done a very good job at the plate … plus we're getting some quality pitching as well.”

The Buffaloes, who currently hold the third and final playoff spot from District 3-2A, return to action Friday with a non-district game at Ralls before heading into the meat-grinder portion of their schedule. Forsan's final three games of the season include games against Slaton and Lubbock Roosevelt, which currently occupy the top two spots in the the league.

“We have two really good teams left to play, but the good news is that we get them here in Forsan,” Phillips said. “We definitely have our work cut out for us, but I know the guys are looking forward to the challenge.”

Guinn earns
regional spot
SNYDER — Big Spring High School's Kelsie Guinn made up a lot of distance in a short time to earn a spot in the Class 3A regional golf tournament.

Guinn, a freshman at BSHS, made up five strokes in the final round of the District 5-3A golf tournament Tuesday in Snyder to earn the regional slot. She ended the three-leg tournament with a total score of 314, good enough for sixth place.

“Kelsie played really well (Tuesday),” BSHS Coach Chris Joslin said. “She was five strokes behind when she started, but by the sixth hole, she had caught up … and went ahead on the 17th hole. She competed really well, especially for just being a freshman.”

Guinn will compete in the Region I-3A golf tournament, scheduled for April 20-21 at Meadowbrook Country Club in Lubbock.

Also Tuesday, Big Spring senior Gabrie Gallier shot a 108 to finish the district tournament with a total score of 314.

Hawks outlast
Midland, 12-11
MIDLAND — The Howard College Hawks overcame an early deficit to take a 12-11 win over Midland College in non-conference baseball action Tuesday afternoon.

The Hawks fell behind 5-2 after five innings before their bats really went to work, scoring 10 runs in the final four innings to earn the win.
“We haven't played many mid-week games,” HC Coach Britt Smith said. “We didn't show up to play early, but the offense really came through in the last part of the game.”

The Hawks collected 16 hits in the game, seven for extra bases. Leading the way was Paul Hendrix, who hit three doubles. Jordan Allen, Tony Calhoun, Nathan Burns and Tyler Collins also had doubles for Howard, which improved to 28-11 for the season.

Despite the game not counting in conference standings, Smith didn't discount its importance.

“It was a good win,” Smith said. “Winning's always important. Momentum is huge, especially in college.”

The Hawks return to Western Junior College Athletic Conference action Friday when they begin a four-game series in Roswell, N.M. Against New Mexico Military Institute. The series begins with a doubleheader beginning at 4 p.m. Big Spring time, and concludes with a Saturday doubleheader which begins at 1 p.m. Big Spring time.
