Ulysses Mathews Jr., 55, of Big Spring died Monday, July 16, 2012, at Midland Memorial Hospital. The family will receive friends from 7 p.m. until 9 p.m. Sunday, July 22, 2012, at Myers & Smith Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Myers & Smith Chapel with Wendell Smith, officiating. Burial will follow at Trinity Memorial Park.
He was born Oct. 23, 1956, in Hearn, Texas, to Jewel and Ulysses Mathews Sr. He graduated from Big Spring High School in 1976. He married Debbie Richards on Feb. 21, 1981, in Big Spring. He was currently employed at the Big Spring State Hospital, where he had more than 36 years of service. He was a big sports and fan and a devoted Dallas Cowboy fan. He was a very loving grandfather and was loved by his co-workers and friends. He loved his family and was very respectful to everyone who knew him. He was a member of Highway 80 Church of Christ.
He is survived by his wife, Debbie Mathews of Big Spring; two sons, Jason Mathews and his fiancé Amanda Perez and Joshua and significant other Lidia, all of Big Spring; four grandchildren, La Bella Mathews, Caprice Mathews, Lexie Mathews and Antonio Pena, all of Big Spring; his parents, Ulysses and Jewel Mathews of Big Spring, four sisters, Martha and Al Lang and Marta and Kenny Maclin, all of Big Spring, Frankie and Tim Green of Dayton, Ohio, and Sharon and Manuel De Jesus of Big Spring; three brothers, Edward Mathews of Big Spring, Mark and Susan Mathews of Arlington and Phillip and Gigi Mathews of Midland; mother-in-law, Sherry Richards; seven nieces and 10 nephews; ex-daughter-in-law, Jennifer Yanez and fiancé Larry Martinez and son little Larry; and many aunts and uncles.
