United Way exceeds goal

November 21, 2011

And the numbers are in …
Blitz Day ended the 2012 Big Spring and Howard County United Way campaign Friday afternoon. The campaign, which started Sept. 1, concluded after three months with an expected goal of $275,000 being exceeded. As of Friday afternoon, the total amount collected was $294,000.
“It has been a wild ride, but we made it and ended up exceeding our numbers,” said Wayland Pierce, United Way president. “We have surpassed our goal, ended on a good note and still have monies trickling in.”
Throughout the campaign, area businesses and community members showed their support for the United Way, in part, by participating in Dine-Out-Days. Executive Director Sandy Stewart said she and the 23 United Way board members are grateful to the local restaurants that took part: Herman's, Chicken Express, Papa Chon's, Carlos Restaurant, Sonic, Dell's Cafe, Hilltop Cafe, Casa Blanca, Big John's BBQ Feedlot and KC Steakhouse.
“We couldn't have done this without the community,” Debbie Wegman, campaign chair, said. “We are very excited to see these numbers and we want the community to know this will go a long way towards helping our 15 agencies.”
For the 2012 campaign, 15 agencies will benefit from the funds, which will be used to support the different programs each agency provides for the community. Those agencies iare American Red Cross of Southwest Texas, Buffalo Trail Council Boy Scouts of America, CASA of West Texas, Dora Roberts Rehabilitation Center, Girl Scouts of the Desert Southwest, Howard County Council on Aging Mobile Meals, Howard County Humane Society, Isaiah 58, Northside Community Center, Rape Crisis/Victim Services of Big Spring, The Salvation Army, Westside Community Day Care Center, YMCA of Big Spring and the two new agencies; Big Spring Chaplains Association and Spring of Siloam.
