Sixteen local organizations had something to be thankful for Tuesday evening.
United Way of Big Spring and Howard County board of directors held its annual meeting at Dora Roberts Community Center where the supported agencies were presented with their portion of $300,000 in allocations for the year, from the 2013 campaign.
The agencies are the American Red Cross, West Texas Chapter; Buffalo Trail Council, Boy Scouts of America; Christian Woman’s Job Corp Spring of Siloam; CASA of West Texas; Council on Aging Mobile Meals, Dora Roberts Rehabilitation Center, Emergency Services Chaplains Corp, Girl Scouts of the Desert Southwest, Howard County Humane Society, Isaiah 58, Northside Community Center, Rape Crisis/Victim Services of Big Spring, The Salvation Army, The Salvation Army Boys and Girls Club, Westside Community Day Care Center and YMCA of Big Spring.
“This has been an amazing year and I look forward to continuing to serve with the United Way for the upcoming year,” Debbie Wegman, outgoing president of United Way of Big Spring and Howard County, said.
Several fundraising events were held throughout 2012, bringing in much-needed support. The annual kick off for the 2013 campaign — Boots and Bling — brought in $7,000 while Empty Bowls brought in 250 people and raised $6,000. The annual golf tournament will be held this spring and is expected to bring in additional revenue.
“The question we have to ask ourselves is 'who is going to make a difference in our community? Who’s it going to be?' It’s not going to be someone outside the agency; it’s not going to be some handout from someone outside without a vested interest in Howard County. It is going to be us,” Larry Rodgers, first vice president of United Way of Big Spring and Howard County, said.
Rodgers said to the agency representatives, “Because of you … you are enhancing the quality of life of a lot of folks who are helpless, scared and without means. You sit there and say I am going to make a difference. I know that sometimes the stories can be hard, but there are so many more success stories and fewer tragedies because of you.”
During the meeting new members Raul Benevides and Jill McCleod were installed. Newly elected officers for 2013, president Ann McClarty, first vice president Larry Rodgers, second vice president Jessica Rivera, secretary Donna Wright and treasurer Linda Adams, were also installed.
