UW fund-raiser nets $6,800

Bowls were filled and a purposed was served during the Empty Bowls — Five Golden Bowls event at First Christian Church Thursday afternoon.

More than 170 area residents flooded the church hall, enjoyed a bowl of soup and walked away with a one-of-a-kind reminder that there are some who constantly have their bowls remain empty. Attendees were able to choose from nine different soups provided by community members.

“This was a really big success,” said Sandy Stewart, executive director for the United Way. “I haven't had a chance to compare numbers from last year, but judging by the number of people in attendance we have surpassed last years numbers. I know we surpassed what we projected for this year.”

The annual event is aimed at drawing attention to the world hunger issue as well as raising money for the years campaign. Empty Bowls served as an end of campaign fundraiser bringing in an excess of $4,500 in ticket sales and an added $2,300 plus from the 13 auctioned bowls.
