Valuations on the rise

An upward trend in minerals — along with a higher appraisal of the Big Spring Refinery — has most area taxing entities enjoying an increase in certified taxable values.
The Howard County Appraisal District released its 2011 certified values this week and the county saw a $418,379,799 increase in its valuations. Those figures are certified at $2,521,294,261 for 2011, compared to $2,102,914,462 the previous year.
Brett McKibben, HCAD chief, said the jump is due to increases in mineral values and higher valuations for the refinery.
