VAMC renaming ceremony delayed

November 2, 2011

Scheduling conflicts have pushed back to early next year plans to rename the local VA Medical Center after Big Spring's only Medal of Honor recipient.

Legislation to rename the center after George H. O'Brien Jr. passed Congress earlier this year and was signed into law by President Obama in October, and local officials had planned to officially rename the facility on Veterans Day, Nov. 11.

However, several dignitaries who plan on attending have scheduling conflicts this month, so the ceremony has been pushed back until January, said Iva Jo Hanslik, community relations director for the VAMC.

“We will do the renaming in January when the House and Senate are on their breaks,” Hanslik said.
