Verl Dero Shaw, 83, of Big Spring died Wednesday, March 21, 2012, at his residence. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 24, 2012, at the Nalley-Pickle & Welch Rosewood Chapel with Rick Cunningham and Craig Shackleford officiating. Interment will follow at Trinity Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. until 7 p.m. Friday, March 23, 2012, at the funeral home.
Verl Dero Shaw was born to Summer and Angeline Peterson Shaw on Dec. 14, 1928, in Howard County. He married Lillian Faye Witt on June 16, 1950, and she preceded him in death Oct. 27, 1973. Verl then married Ioma Heard Aug. 7, 1976, in Midland and she preceded him in death March 5, 2012.
Verl was a lifetime resident of Howard County, having farmed in the Knott area for 40 years before retiring and moving to Big Spring. He was president and board member of the Knott Coop Gin for many years.
Verl enlisted in the United States Marine Corps on Aug. 15, 1946, in El Toro, California. He served as an aircraft engine mechanic until he was honorably discharged at the rank of corporal Dec. 21, 1950. He then came back to Knott, where he worked at Webb Air Force Base until his retirement.
He was a member of 14th and Main Church of Christ where he served as an elder for many years.
Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Dero and Jeanine Shaw of Knott; four daughters and sons-in-law, Angela and Tony Gillespie of Knott, Sheree and LeRoy Denny of Midland, Marsha and Mark McHan of Abilene and Brenda and Lynn Keith of Arlington; 12 grandchildren, Heath Gillespie, Steven Gillespie, Andrea Hataway, Brent Denny, Lisa Wester, Sloan Shaw, Stephanie Cross, Kim Gordon, Keely Loomis, Casey Biffle, Blaine Boulter and Brianne Boulter; 16 great-grandchildren; four brothers, Larry Shaw of Big Spring, Franklin Shaw of Seminole, Roosevelt Shaw of Big Spring and Ronald Shaw of Smyer; two sisters, Nelda Tobias of Brownwood and JoAnn Peugh of Stanton; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Summer Lee Shaw, Marlin Shaw, Gene Shaw and Delano Shaw; and one sister, Rhodell Shaw Kirby.
