Vernon ends BSHS volleyball's season in playoffs

November 3, 2010

Big Spring's Taylor Seaton spikes the ball in one of the Lady Steers' games earlier this season.

ALBANY — The Big Spring volleyball team's season is over.

The Lady Steers were in a long, hard-fought battle all night in their bi-district playoff game against Vernon, but the Lady Lions prevailed in five set 25-20, 19-25, 15-25, 30-28, 15-9.

This match had all the twists and turns one could handle. Vernon got the advantage early, especially in the first set. The Lady Lions held on to the lead the whole set, while service errors and Vernon's persistence caused problems for the Lady Steers.

It wasn't like this all night, though. The Lady Steers got their first lead of the match in the second set at 9-8. The likes of Bridgette Tuitt, Taylor Seaton and Belle Feaster were too much for the Lady Lions at this point. A Feaster kill made it 17-12 and a kill from Tuitt later made it 23-16 Big Spring.

Big Spring's grip on the match extended to the third set, where an ace from Clara Benavides, kill from Desiree Anderson and two consecutive Vernon errors put the Lady Steers up 20-13.

It was the fourth set that made this match. This set went back and forth, with no team claiming a substantial lead until late. Big Spring was up 18-15, but Vernon found a way to tie it at 19. All of a sudden, it went from a tied set to a 23-21 Vernon lead. At that point Diamond Mayes and Cerbi Ritchey teamed up on a huge block to make it 23-22, then Anderson had a clutch kill to tie the set again at 23. It took 30 points to decide this set and it was the longest set Big Spring has been in this season.

Vernon came out swinging after taking the fourth set. The Lady Lions jumped out to a 7-0 lead. While the Lady Steers made it interesting at 14-7, Vernon already had the win in sight.
