CISD board to name new principal
Wednesday, 16 January 2008

By STEVE REAGAN Staff Writer
COAHOMA — School district trustees here are expected to name a new high school principal when they their regular monthly meeting at 7 p.m. Thursday in the administration board room.

John Massey, who was in his third year as principal of Coahoma High School, resigned in December to accept the superintendent position at Eden Independent School District.

Since that time, Coahoma Superintendent Jerry Johnson said he has received almost 20 applications for the position, with the majority coming from outside Howard County.

Johnson said he will recommend a replacement at Thursday’s meeting, although he declined to go into specifics.

Another personnel matter that will come to the board’s attention Thursday is the district’s annual superintendent evaluation.

Johnson is currently in his third year with Coahoma ISD. After each prior evaluation, he has received both high marks from the board and an extension to his contract, which currently runs through June 2010.

Other items that trustees will consider include:

• Construction update. Johnson said several projects authorized in the 2006 bond election are proceeding according to schedule.

The shell of the new athletic field house has been erected and work on the building’s interior has commenced.

Elsewhere, workers have begun pouring the foundation for the new high school wing and renovations to the high school band hall and auditorium are on schedule, Johnson said.

“We’ve had no major (disruption) problems at all,” Johnson said. “I’m very pleased with the construction company and the way things have gone.”

• Trustee elections. The school board is to discuss preliminary actions that need to be performed prior to the May 10 elections.

Seats currently held by Dale Coates and Mike Blissard, as well as the position vacated by John Wayne Metcalf, are up for election this year.

My family has lived in Big Spring for 31 years. This last Thursday my mother, Geri York and I had to go out of town for some doctors appts. We stopped at the very last gas station as you leave town heading to Midland. I think it is a Shell Sation. We had to get a gallon of water to add to my truck. We purchased the water and before we could even get it into the truck we had two seperate men ask if we needed any help. This is the reason we live in Big Spring and West Texas!!

The greed of the people in Big Spring has become unbelievable since shortly after the refinery explosion! Now that there is an influx of out-of-towners the supply and demand of housing is being strained. Rent has suddenly doubled (or more) and "trailer parks" are popping up all over to help accomodate. All these good ol' boys are lining their pockets on opportunity presented by tragedy and it makes me sick. Not only are they raping the newcomers for their money, but those of us who have lived here for years haven't suddenly come into a lot of money. We still work regular jobs with regular pay. Now we can't even afford to live in our own town because of the greed of all these opportunists!
