Chamber banquet draws near: Deadline to acquire tickets is 5 p.m. Friday
Thursday, 17 January 2008

By STEVE REAGAN Staff Writer
Time is growing short to obtain tickets to the annual Big Spring Area Chamber of Commerce Banquet.
The deadline for purchasing tickets to the banquet — scheduled for 6:30 p.m. next Thursday in Dorothy Garrett Coliseum — is 5 p.m. Friday, chamber officials said.

Tickets are $25 apiece and can only be purchased at the Chamber Office, 215 W. Third. They will not be available at the door, said Debbye ValVerde, executive director of the chamber.

“Celebrating Howard County” will be the theme for this year’s banquet.

“We’re showing off us,” ValVerde said. “We’re showing off Howard County, Big Spring, Coahoma and Forsan.”

Emcees for the event are Jay Hendricks and Tatum Hubbard, news anchors for KOSA-TV in Odessa.

Breaking from tradition, the banquet will not feature a keynote speaker; instead, officials plan on a PowerPoint presentation highlighting area accomplishments during the past year.

“We’re going to celebrate Howard County, Big Spring, Coahoma and Forsan,” said Debbye ValVerde, executive director of the chamber. “We’ve had a lot of positive things happen in this area, such as downtown renovation efforts, and we want to salute those accomplishments.”

An annual feature of the event that will remain is the naming of the chamber’s man and woman of the year. JoBeth Corwin and Jim Little, who won the awards last year, will present the honorees.

ValVerde said 48 area businesses have signed up to decorate tables at the banquet.

“We’d like to see those tables full,” she said. “There’s going to be lots of great give-aways. These people go all-out in promoting their businesses.”

Corporate sponsors for this year’s banquet are Wells Fargo, State National Bank, First Bank of West Texas and Water Water, she added.

For more information, contact the chamber at 263-7641.

My family has lived in Big Spring for 31 years. This last Thursday my mother, Geri York and I had to go out of town for some doctors appts. We stopped at the very last gas station as you leave town heading to Midland. I think it is a Shell Sation. We had to get a gallon of water to add to my truck. We purchased the water and before we could even get it into the truck we had two seperate men ask if we needed any help. This is the reason we live in Big Spring and West Texas!!

The greed of the people in Big Spring has become unbelievable since shortly after the refinery explosion! Now that there is an influx of out-of-towners the supply and demand of housing is being strained. Rent has suddenly doubled (or more) and "trailer parks" are popping up all over to help accomodate. All these good ol' boys are lining their pockets on opportunity presented by tragedy and it makes me sick. Not only are they raping the newcomers for their money, but those of us who have lived here for years haven't suddenly come into a lot of money. We still work regular jobs with regular pay. Now we can't even afford to live in our own town because of the greed of all these opportunists!
