Candidate filing slow for area school boards
Saturday, 01 March 2008

The question facing some area school district voters is not whether they will decide contested races, but if there will be any candidates filing for trustee spots.

With little more than a week remaining before the filing deadline, not only are there no contested trustee elections on the horizon, but two of the three Howard County public school districts report no candidate filiings at all.

Persons interested in running for area school board elections have until March 10 to announce their candidacies.

Howard College and area school districts, with the exception of Glasscock County and Grady, will hold trustee elections May 10.

Big Spring Independent School District will elect two trustees this year. The District 1 seat currently held by Irene Galan, and the District 3 seat held by Board President Alan Partee are up for election, BSISD Business Manager Debbie Green said.

Galan and Partee have both filed for re-election. Both seats will be for three-year terms.

Candidates can file for the election from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday at the district business office on 11th Place.

All three incumbents have filed for re-election to the Howard County Junior College District Board of Trustees, officials said.

At-large seats currently held by Dr. Charles Warren, John Freeman and Marie Ethridge are up for election this year. Warren, Freeman and Ethridge have filed for additional six-year terms, said Steve Smith, assistant to the college president.

Candidates for the HC board may file for the election between 8 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. in the college president’s office in the administration building.

In Coahoma, three at-large seats are up for election, said Administration Secretary Judy Dobbs.

Three-year seats currently held by Dale Coates and Mike Blissard will be up for election. In addition, an election will be held to fill the unexpired term of the seat vacated by John Wayne Metcalf, who recently resigned.

No candidates had filed in Coahoma as of Friday, Dobbs said, adding that they may do so from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday in the administration building.

Forsan ISD will elect three trustees in May. At-large seats currently held by Beckie Wash, Marty Whetsel and Dale Humphreys will be decided, although no candidates have filed as of Friday.

Administration Secretary Judy Park said candidates may file at the administration building between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Stanton ISD voters will elect three trustees this spring — three-year terms in Districts 3 (currently held by Valerie Smith) and 4 (in which Todd Smith is the incumbent) and a one-year unexpired term in District 7, currently held by Reggie Franklin.

The two Smiths (who are not related) and Franklin have filed for election to their respective districts.

Persons interested in the election may file between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday at the business office, Business Manager Brad Holland said.

My family has lived in Big Spring for 31 years. This last Thursday my mother, Geri York and I had to go out of town for some doctors appts. We stopped at the very last gas station as you leave town heading to Midland. I think it is a Shell Sation. We had to get a gallon of water to add to my truck. We purchased the water and before we could even get it into the truck we had two seperate men ask if we needed any help. This is the reason we live in Big Spring and West Texas!!

The greed of the people in Big Spring has become unbelievable since shortly after the refinery explosion! Now that there is an influx of out-of-towners the supply and demand of housing is being strained. Rent has suddenly doubled (or more) and "trailer parks" are popping up all over to help accomodate. All these good ol' boys are lining their pockets on opportunity presented by tragedy and it makes me sick. Not only are they raping the newcomers for their money, but those of us who have lived here for years haven't suddenly come into a lot of money. We still work regular jobs with regular pay. Now we can't even afford to live in our own town because of the greed of all these opportunists!
