School board filings increase: Monday is last day to file
Friday, 07 March 2008

By STEVE REAGAN Staff Writer
As the deadline for filing aproaches, candidates for school trustee elections have started tossing their hats in the ring.

Unlike last week — when it appeared that some races wouldn’t even attract candidates, filings have increased markedly, officials said.

Persons interested in running for area school board elections have until Monday afternoon to announce their candidacies.

Howard College and area school districts, with the exception of Glasscock County and Grady, will hold trustee elections May 10.

Forsan ISD will elect three trustees in May. At-large seats currently held by Beckie Wash, Marty Whetsel and Dale Humphreys will be decided.

Four candidates, including Wash, have announced their candidacies, Administration Secretary Judy Park said.

Wash will be joined on the ballot by Timary Rosenbaum, an employee at CDR Properties, and brothers Tim and Courtney Ballard. Tim Ballard is a letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service, while Courtney Ballard is a truck driver.

Park said candidates may file at the administration building between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Big Spring Independent School District will elect two trustees this year. The District 1 seat currently held by Irene Galan, and the District 3 seat held by Board President Alan Partee are up for election, BSISD Business Manager Debbie Green said.

Galan and Partee have both filed for re-election. Both seats will be for three-year terms.

Candidates can file for the election from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday at the district business office on 11th Place.

All three incumbents have filed for re-election to the Howard County Junior College District Board of Trustees, officials said.

At-large seats currently held by Dr. Charles Warren, John Freeman and Marie Ethridge are expected to be contested this year. Warren, Freeman and Ethridge have filed for additional six-year terms, said Steve Smith, assistant to the college president.

Candidates for the HC board may file for the election between 8 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. in the college president’s office in the administration building.

In Coahoma, three at-large seats are up for election.

Three-year seats currently held by Dale Coates and Mike Blissard will be up for election. In addition, an election will be held to fill the unexpired term of the seat vacated by John Wayne Metcalf, who recently resigned.

Blissard has filed for re-election and has been joined on the ballot by Lori Martinez, an employee of First Bank of West Texas, Superintendent Jerry Johnson said.

No other candidates have filed as of this morning, but may do so from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday in the administration building.

Stanton ISD voters will elect three trustees this spring — three-year terms in Districts 3 (currently held by Valerie Smith) and 4 (in which Todd Smith is the incumbent) and a one-year unexpired term in District 7, currently held by Reggie Franklin.

The two Smiths (who are not related) and Franklin have filed for election to their respective dostricts. Persons interested in the election may file between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday at the business office, Business Manager Brad Holland said.

Incumbents Robin Barraza and Martin Nichols are the only candidates to annouce to date in the Sands Consolidated Independent School District trustee election, Superintendent Wayne Blount said.

Persons interested in running have until 4 p.m. Monday to file at the school office, Blount added.

My family has lived in Big Spring for 31 years. This last Thursday my mother, Geri York and I had to go out of town for some doctors appts. We stopped at the very last gas station as you leave town heading to Midland. I think it is a Shell Sation. We had to get a gallon of water to add to my truck. We purchased the water and before we could even get it into the truck we had two seperate men ask if we needed any help. This is the reason we live in Big Spring and West Texas!!

The greed of the people in Big Spring has become unbelievable since shortly after the refinery explosion! Now that there is an influx of out-of-towners the supply and demand of housing is being strained. Rent has suddenly doubled (or more) and "trailer parks" are popping up all over to help accomodate. All these good ol' boys are lining their pockets on opportunity presented by tragedy and it makes me sick. Not only are they raping the newcomers for their money, but those of us who have lived here for years haven't suddenly come into a lot of money. We still work regular jobs with regular pay. Now we can't even afford to live in our own town because of the greed of all these opportunists!
