Mike Ritchey is returning, if only temporarily, to his old job.
Big Spring Independent School District Superintendent Michael Downes announced Friday that Ritchey, currently the district’s athletic director, will also serve as interim principal at Big Spring High School, replacing Bruce Wilson, who has been placed on administrative leave until the end of the school year.
Wilson, who was in his first year as principal, submitted his resignation Feb. 13, the day before school trustees declined to extend his contract.
Downes would not comment on the reasons behind Wilson’s resignation or his placement on administrative leave.
Ritchey is no stranger to the BSHS principal’s chair, having occupied that office for several years before becoming athletic director and head football coach in May 2007.
He said he does not anticipate his double duty to be too taxing.
“I just have to manage my time and be aware of the needs in both areas,” he said. “It’s important that I prioritize ... We’ve got a great team at both the athletic department and the high school. This isn’t something you can accomplish by yourself. It truly is a team effort.”
Ritchey said he anticipates holding down both jobs through the conclusion of the school year. Downes noted that the job opening has been posted with different organizations and applications will be reviewed within the next few months.
