ISD races: Some contested, most not
Wednesday, 12 March 2008

By STEVE REAGAN Staff Writer
It was either feast or famine when it came to filings for area school board races this year.
Two school districts — Coahoma and Forsan — will have a figurative crowded house full of candidates, while none others will feature contested races.

A flurry of last-minute candidacies on the last day of filing Monday left seven candidates vying for three spots on the Coahoma school district board of trustees.

Incumbents Mike Blissard and Dale Coates will be joined by Power Resources technician Patric Robinson and First Bank of West Texas official Lori Martinez in the race for two at-large seats on the board.

Also, Kirk Allen, Cindy Fowler and James Sanders will run for the one-year unexpired term of former trustee John Wayne Metcalf.

Allen is a railroad conductor, Fowler is a retired educator and Sanders is employed by a local correctional facility, CISD Administration Secretary Judy Dobbs said.

The Forsan ISD race will feature five candidates vying for three at-large seats.

Beckie Wash is the only incumbent seeking re-election and she will be joined on the ballot by Timary Rosenbaum, an employee at CDR Properties, Tim Ballard, a USPS letter carrier, Courtney Ballard, a truck driver, and firefighter Glenn Graves.

Other trustee elections in the area will have incumbents unopposed for re-election. Those districts include:

• Big Spring ISD — Incumbents Irene Galan (District 1) and Alan Partee (District 3) will earn new three-year terms.

• Howard College — Dr. Charles Warren, John Freeman and Marie Ethridge are unopposed in their quest for new six-year terms.

• Stanton ISD — New three-year terms are expected for incumbents Valerie Smith (District 3), Todd Smith (District 4) and Reggie Franklin (District 7).

• Sands CISD — Incumbents Robin Barraza and Martin Nichols are unopposed for re-election to their at-large positions.

My family has lived in Big Spring for 31 years. This last Thursday my mother, Geri York and I had to go out of town for some doctors appts. We stopped at the very last gas station as you leave town heading to Midland. I think it is a Shell Sation. We had to get a gallon of water to add to my truck. We purchased the water and before we could even get it into the truck we had two seperate men ask if we needed any help. This is the reason we live in Big Spring and West Texas!!

The greed of the people in Big Spring has become unbelievable since shortly after the refinery explosion! Now that there is an influx of out-of-towners the supply and demand of housing is being strained. Rent has suddenly doubled (or more) and "trailer parks" are popping up all over to help accomodate. All these good ol' boys are lining their pockets on opportunity presented by tragedy and it makes me sick. Not only are they raping the newcomers for their money, but those of us who have lived here for years haven't suddenly come into a lot of money. We still work regular jobs with regular pay. Now we can't even afford to live in our own town because of the greed of all these opportunists!
