Who gobbles down more than a thousand hot dogs? The same people who run after 60,000 Easter eggs, of course.
For the fifth year Friday, Lamun-Lusk-Sanchez Texas State Veterans Home will hold its Community Easter Egg Hunt on the facility grounds at 1809 N. Highway 87. The event will begin at 1:45 p.m.
It’s a good idea to come early because there will be a crowd.
“Last year we had 3,200 people out here and we’re expecting more this time,” said Tony Cruz, activities director. “I know our residents are looking forward to it. They were ready to begin stuffing eggs in January.”
It takes time to put candy and coupons in all those eggs.
“We have been stuffing eggs for a little more than a month now, and that’s just about every day,” noted Cruz, who said the veterans do get some help. “Today (Tuesday), the Red Hat Society is here. We’ve had other groups volunteer, too. It’s a great help.”
The 60,000-plus eggs are stuffed with candy and coupons that were donated by local merchants. The coupons are for free drinks, ice cream and other treats. Four eggs found by lucky hunters will contain a coupon for a large Easter basket. Four others will contain a coupon for a new bicycle.
Easter egg hunters are divided into three age groups: 0 through 3, 4 through 7 and 8 through 12. Baskets aren’t provided.
“We invite all children to bring a basket to put their eggs in and to bring a parent,” said Cruz. “We really can’t handle a lot of kids without adult supervision.”
It doesn’t take long for 3,000 running, screaming children to de-egg a plot of land, so that’s not the only activity planned Friday.
“We’ll be giving away hot dogs on a first-come, first-served basis again. Last year, we handed out more than 1,000 hot dogs to children and adults,” recalled Cruz. “We’ll have drinks, and this year we’ll have cotton candy, too.”
Train rides and a visit by a clown and a large rabbit will be among the other goings-on at the state veterans home Friday. And it’s all free to the public.
“Come on out and have a good time,” said Cruz. “We always have a lot of fun.”
