One Big Spring man is dead and a second in custody after a shoot out with an undercover narcotics officer Monday afternoon in the 700 block of Lorilla.

Patrick Rios, 36, of 3206 W. Eighth Street was shot and killed in front of a home located in the 700 block of Lorilla, near the intersection of W. Eighth Street. Theodore Rios, 38, of also of 3206 W. Eighth Street, was arrested at the scene on two local warrants and a charge of assault by contact, according to police records.

According to Sgt. Tony Everett, public information officer with the Big Spring Police Department, the fatal shooting was reported at approximately 11:40 a.m.

“An officer with the police department assigned to narcotics investigations was threatened by a subject armed with a shotgun,” said Everett. “The officer fired, killing the suspect. The deceased was identified as Patrick Rios of Big Spring.”

Everett said the shooting is being investigated by the Texas Rangers, standard procedure when a law enforcement officer is involved in a shooting.

“The officer has been placed on administrative leave, which is standard procedure in a shooting situation,” said Everett.

Officials with the Lubbock Texas Rangers office could not be reached at press time.

It is every officers thought every day to go home to his family,If you pull a gun on him he asumes you plan on using that wepon .If you dont wont to get shot dont pull a gun on an offices it that simple .He's just doing his job . We need to thank them for the job they do for so little pay.

If a person pulls a gun on a police officer, then the cop has the right and duty to the citizens to shoot that person. Thank you officer for doing your job as you were trained.

If you don't want to wind up in the newspaper obituary column, don't threaten a law enforcement officer with a gun. It's pretty simple ... and Kathy, what was he doing outside with a shotgun, anyway ... looking for prairie dogs?

I am in complete agreement with Janis. It's common sense and pretty simple: don't pull a firearm (or any other weapon for that matter) on an officer. Should the officer have waited for the guy to shoot him first? Riiiight.... Makes PERFECT sense.
