Routine agenda for County Commissioners meeting Monday
Saturday, 12 April 2008

Bids to dominate Monday meeting

By THOMAS JENKINS
Staff Writer
Howard County commissioners will meet to discuss a number of routine items Monday morning, including bids for aggregate and asphalt, items the county has contracted with the Big Spring Refinery for in the past.

However, it’s unclear whether the the local plant — owned by Alon USA — will be able to supply the products due to the Feb. 18 explosion that rocked the facility and last Monday’s fire that swept through the asphalt tank battery, destroying at least one tank.

The court is also expected to consider bids concerning the sale of county vehicles and bids for the lease of a concessions area in the lobby of the county courthouse.

“Years ago, there used to be a snack bar on the first floor,” said County Judge Mark Barr. “We’ve had a couple approach us, and they are interested in opening it back up. However, before we can do that, we have to go out on bids for it.”

Also during the meeting, County Treasurer Teresa Thomas will report on personnel concerns and the county payroll, while Road and Bridge Administrator Eddy Jameson will present pipeline crossings and a report on road maintenance.

Jameson is also expected to discuss the use of cell phones in his department, as well as a request for the purchase of a vehicle.

Chief Jailer Mike Averette is to meet with commissioners to discuss an on-call medic for evenings at the jail.

Architect Jeff Heffelfinger, the project coordinator for the construction of the new jail facility, is also listed on the agenda, but its unclear whether he will be available to make a report, according to county officials.

Commissioners will also take a tour of the Howard County Library — time permitting — and are expected to approve a pair of proclamations, including National Crime Victims’ Rights Week and declre 2008 as Colorectal Cancer Awareness and Prevention Year.

The meeting will get under way at 10 a.m. in the commissioners courtroom, located on the second floor of the courthouse.

My family has lived in Big Spring for 31 years. This last Thursday my mother, Geri York and I had to go out of town for some doctors appts. We stopped at the very last gas station as you leave town heading to Midland. I think it is a Shell Sation. We had to get a gallon of water to add to my truck. We purchased the water and before we could even get it into the truck we had two seperate men ask if we needed any help. This is the reason we live in Big Spring and West Texas!!

The greed of the people in Big Spring has become unbelievable since shortly after the refinery explosion! Now that there is an influx of out-of-towners the supply and demand of housing is being strained. Rent has suddenly doubled (or more) and "trailer parks" are popping up all over to help accomodate. All these good ol' boys are lining their pockets on opportunity presented by tragedy and it makes me sick. Not only are they raping the newcomers for their money, but those of us who have lived here for years haven't suddenly come into a lot of money. We still work regular jobs with regular pay. Now we can't even afford to live in our own town because of the greed of all these opportunists!
