Local man charged with evading, endangering

By THOMAS JENKINS
Staff Writer
A 26-year-old Big Spring man has been arrested after police officials say he led officers on a car chase with a 9-year-old passenger believed to be his step-son Sunday afternoon.

Steve Rodriguez, 26, of 100 N. Wasson Drive, was arrested Tuesday at Scenic Mountain Medical Center on charges of evading arrest and endangering a child.

Sgt. Tony Everett, public information officer with the Big Spring Police Department, said Sunday’s chase began just after 3 p.m. when an officer attempted to pull over the man, who was driving a white Pontiac Grand Prix, for a traffic violation.

“The suspect sped up and got onto the Interstate (Highway 20) and exited somewhere near Moss Lake Road,” said Everett. “The Department of Public Safety and Howard County Sheriff’s Office assisted in the chase.”

Everett said the pursuit ended when the driver of the Grand Prix drove down a dead-end street.

“The suspect exited the vehicle, leaving the 9-year-old child behind,” said Everett. “That’s where the charge of abandoning/endangering a child comes from, as a result of the pursuit. The man took off on foot and is believed to have ingested a substance. He was taken to Scenic Mountain Medical Center, where he was treated.”

Everett said it’s unclear whether Rodriguez did or did not ingest drugs at the end of the chase.

“When a suspect tells us he’s ingested drugs, we have to take them to the hospital,” said Everett. “He told the hospital officials the same thing, so they treated him for ingested chemicals. However, at this time we really have no idea what he swallowed, if anything.”

Police officials initially declined to release Rodriguez’s identity pending his arrest due to the nature of the open investigation.

I moved here to feel safe, but recently our town is turning into an unsafe place with this kind of stuff of avoiding police with a child in the car, drive by shootings, the homeless kidnapping children...I hope law enforcement really starts to lay a heavy hand because it's getting rediculous around here!

Big Spring is a very small town and has more drug and gang activite than the larger towns that surrround us, I just hope that the law enforcement can step up and get this crazy little town back in order. I just pray for everyone and there families how have suffered tragity at the hands of others, God Bless Everyone in this little town.

My family has lived in Big Spring for 31 years. This last Thursday my mother, Geri York and I had to go out of town for some doctors appts. We stopped at the very last gas station as you leave town heading to Midland. I think it is a Shell Sation. We had to get a gallon of water to add to my truck. We purchased the water and before we could even get it into the truck we had two seperate men ask if we needed any help. This is the reason we live in Big Spring and West Texas!!

The greed of the people in Big Spring has become unbelievable since shortly after the refinery explosion! Now that there is an influx of out-of-towners the supply and demand of housing is being strained. Rent has suddenly doubled (or more) and "trailer parks" are popping up all over to help accomodate. All these good ol' boys are lining their pockets on opportunity presented by tragedy and it makes me sick. Not only are they raping the newcomers for their money, but those of us who have lived here for years haven't suddenly come into a lot of money. We still work regular jobs with regular pay. Now we can't even afford to live in our own town because of the greed of all these opportunists!
