Forsan High School Drama Department members hope their quiet little comedy keeps charming judges for a few more weeks.

The department’s rendition of “I Remember Mama” won one of the top two spots at last weekend’s Region II-1A One-Act Play Contest, earning Forsan a spot in next month’s University Interscholastic League State Academic Contest.

Almost every area high school will have a representative at the spring meet, set for the weekend of May 3 in Austin.

This marks the first time in seven years that FHS thespians have earned a spot in the state contest.

Jim Rhodes, director of the play, said everything — cast, crew, music and costumes — has come together at the right time for his charges.

“When I was watching them perform, I was really impressed. Everything was just clicking,” Rhodes said. “I thought, ‘Well, if the judges don’t like it, at least we went out on a high note.’”

But the judges did like the family comedy, judging it and Munday High School’s play as the region’s representatives at the state contest.

“I’m not trying to say it was unexpected or that it was expected, but it was a great feeling,” Rhodes said.

Rhodes has directed the high school band to top state rankings in concert and marching within the past 12 months. Does he have at least one more golden moment left in him?

“I don’t know,” he said. “I told everybody that if we win state, I’m going to have to retire and write a book.”

Forsan’s other representative at the state UIL meet will be junior Stephanie Williams, who will compete in the Class 1A Poetry Interpretation competition.

Other area representatives at the state UIL meet will be:
Big Spring High School qualified four students for the state contest. Maurice Africh and James Bowen led the way with first-place finishes in Prose Interpretation and Feature Writing, respectively, at last weekend’s Region I-4A meet in San Angelo.
Kade Parker and Rachel Overby also earned spots at the state meet by finishing second in their respective events — Informative Speaking and Number Sense — at the regional meet.
Coahoma High School’s Logan Stone will be the school’s representative at the UIL state meet, advancing on the basis of his third-place finish in Editorial Writing at last weekend’s Region I-2A Spring Meet.
Garden City High School continued its dominance in academic meets, winning overall team honors at the Region II-1A contest in Lubbock.
GCHS earned 226 points to easily claim first-place team honors, outdistancing Borden County High School, which finished second with 104 points.
Wade Jansa was a one-man wrecking crew for Garden City, earning first-place finishes in calculator applications, computer science, mathematics, number sense, biology, chemistry, science and physics.
Others earning spots at the state meet included Amy Multer (accounting), Michael Clark (calculator applications and mathematics), Brooke Halfmann (computer applications) and Mikela Barton (editorial writing and literary criticism).

My family has lived in Big Spring for 31 years. This last Thursday my mother, Geri York and I had to go out of town for some doctors appts. We stopped at the very last gas station as you leave town heading to Midland. I think it is a Shell Sation. We had to get a gallon of water to add to my truck. We purchased the water and before we could even get it into the truck we had two seperate men ask if we needed any help. This is the reason we live in Big Spring and West Texas!!

The greed of the people in Big Spring has become unbelievable since shortly after the refinery explosion! Now that there is an influx of out-of-towners the supply and demand of housing is being strained. Rent has suddenly doubled (or more) and "trailer parks" are popping up all over to help accomodate. All these good ol' boys are lining their pockets on opportunity presented by tragedy and it makes me sick. Not only are they raping the newcomers for their money, but those of us who have lived here for years haven't suddenly come into a lot of money. We still work regular jobs with regular pay. Now we can't even afford to live in our own town because of the greed of all these opportunists!
