Graduation ceremonies set for Howard, SWCID
Wednesday, 07 May 2008
By STEVE REAGAN
Staff Writer
It's cap and gown time again.
Students at Howard College and SouthWest Collegiate Institute for the Deaf will receive their degrees in commencement exercises scheduled this week at both campuses.

Activities begin Thursday when Howard College nursing students receive their pins during a ceremony scheduled for 6 p.m. in the Hall Center for the Arts studio theater.

Later that evening, SWCID will hold its annual awards convocation to honor its best and brightest at ceremonies scheduled for 7 p.m. in the Activity Center.

The top award to be presented Thursday is the President's Award, annually given to the student who best combines scholarship and leadership during the school year, officials said. Other awards to be presented include the Sherrie Baird Scholarship, Alice Haynes Rotary DLT Scholarship, American Legion and Chamber of Commerce awards and scholarships named in honor of Dr. P.W. Malone and Phillip Waldrup.

In addition, outstanding students in various subject areas will be recognized during the convocation.

Commencement ceremonies kick into high gear Friday.

SWCID students will be the first to walk the stage when they receive their diplomas at ceremonies scheduled for 10 a.m. in the Activity Center.

SWCID officials said 28 students are scheduled to receive diplomas during the ceremonies, which will be highlighted by a commencement address by new SWCID Provost Mark Myers.

That afternoon, Howard College Dental Hygiene students will receive their pins at 4 p.m. in the Hall Center auditorium.

Ceremonies will conclude with Howard College commencement exercises, scheduled for 7 p.m. in Garrett Coliseum. More than 180 students are expected to receive diplomas during the event, officials said.

My family has lived in Big Spring for 31 years. This last Thursday my mother, Geri York and I had to go out of town for some doctors appts. We stopped at the very last gas station as you leave town heading to Midland. I think it is a Shell Sation. We had to get a gallon of water to add to my truck. We purchased the water and before we could even get it into the truck we had two seperate men ask if we needed any help. This is the reason we live in Big Spring and West Texas!!

The greed of the people in Big Spring has become unbelievable since shortly after the refinery explosion! Now that there is an influx of out-of-towners the supply and demand of housing is being strained. Rent has suddenly doubled (or more) and "trailer parks" are popping up all over to help accomodate. All these good ol' boys are lining their pockets on opportunity presented by tragedy and it makes me sick. Not only are they raping the newcomers for their money, but those of us who have lived here for years haven't suddenly come into a lot of money. We still work regular jobs with regular pay. Now we can't even afford to live in our own town because of the greed of all these opportunists!
