FORSAN — School trustees here will consider pay raises for the coming school year when they hold their regular monthly meeting at 7 p.m. Monday in the administration building board room.
Forsan ISD Superintendent Randy Johnson said he will recommend the board approve a $1,000 annual raise for teachers and a 5 percent raise for other district personnel.
Currently, FISD teachers receive $4,444 above state guidelines, Johnson said, and would be the first raise teachers have received in two years.
The raises are necessary to keep Forsan competitive with other school districts in the race to recruit and retain teachers, he noted.
“We do a salary comparison every year before we make recommendations,” Johnson said. “The Texas Association of School Boards provides us with a study that shows how we compare, both state-wide and with other districts in our area. Based on those comparisons, we try to maintain a competitive salary schedule.”
Johnson believes those efforts have been successful.
“We've been able to stay competitive with salaries and we're proud of that,” he said. “We wish we were able to give more, but we've certainly been able to stay competitive.”
The 5 percent raise would apply to all non-teaching employees, such as administrators, secretaries and maintenance workers.
Johnson said the raises, if approved, will take effect with the 2008-2009 school year.
Also Monday, the board will swear in new members Tim Ballard and Glen Graves. Ballard, an employee with the U.S. Postal Service, and Graves, deputy chief of the Big Spring Fire Department, won election to the board in Saturday's election, along with incumbent Beckie Wash.
Johnson said the board will also elect new officers Monday.
In other business, trustees will consider:
• Purchasing two pickups for the maintenance department.
• A resolution regarding the district's new retirement plan.
• Staffing for the 2008-2009 school year.
• Agreements with the Region 18 Educational Service Center.
