Dunnam resigns: Takes position at Stephenville
Wednesday, 21 May 2008
By STEVE REAGAN
Staff Writer
Big Spring Independent School District is in need of a new No. 2 person.
Carie Dunnam, assistant superintendent for Big Spring ISD, has resigned to take a similar position with the Stephenville school district.

Dunnam's resignation is effective Friday. She assumes her duties in Stephenville June 2.

She has been assistant superintendent at Big Spring the past two years. Before that, she was princfipal at Marcy Elementary for several years.

“I wanted to get closer to my family,” Dunnam said. “My dad lives in Granbury, my son lives in Dallas and my sisters live in McKinney. I'll be 30 minutes away from them, so this was a great opportunity.”

She was selected from among six finalists for the position, she said.

“I interviewed with them May 9, and they called me later that day to offer me the position,” she said.

Dunnam admitted, however, she will leave Big Spring with regret.

“It has been a privilege and honor to work with some very dedicated people who put kids first,” she said. “I've been a member of this community since 1968. I have life-long friends in this community I'm saying goodbye to, so this is bittersweet to me.”

BSISD Superintendent Michael Downes said the district will miss Dunnam.

“She's been a tremendous asset to Big Spring ISD,” Downes said. “Through Carie's leadership, the district achieved 100 percent highly qualified (teacher) status for the first time. I'm excited for Carie and the opportunity she will have to provide similar leadership in Stephenville.”

District officials will post the job opening for 10 days before interviewing candidates. Downes said the district hopes to name a replacement in the near future.

My family has lived in Big Spring for 31 years. This last Thursday my mother, Geri York and I had to go out of town for some doctors appts. We stopped at the very last gas station as you leave town heading to Midland. I think it is a Shell Sation. We had to get a gallon of water to add to my truck. We purchased the water and before we could even get it into the truck we had two seperate men ask if we needed any help. This is the reason we live in Big Spring and West Texas!!

The greed of the people in Big Spring has become unbelievable since shortly after the refinery explosion! Now that there is an influx of out-of-towners the supply and demand of housing is being strained. Rent has suddenly doubled (or more) and "trailer parks" are popping up all over to help accomodate. All these good ol' boys are lining their pockets on opportunity presented by tragedy and it makes me sick. Not only are they raping the newcomers for their money, but those of us who have lived here for years haven't suddenly come into a lot of money. We still work regular jobs with regular pay. Now we can't even afford to live in our own town because of the greed of all these opportunists!
