Suspects surrender
Friday, 30 May 2008

A pair of suspects in Tuesday's shooting in the 1600 block of Third Street turned themselves in to local authorities today, as investigators with the Big Spring Police Department continue to probe into the incident.

Taken into custody this morning were 42-year-old Roland Garcia and 18-year-old Tony Martinez, both charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, according to Sgt. Tony Everett, public information officer for the BSPD.

“Both of these men are believed to have been involved in the shooting at the Detail Shop located at the corner of Third Street and Birdwell Lane,” said Everett. “Both men turned themselves in to Mike Welling, the director of Howard County's pre-trial bonding program, without incident.”

Antonio Florez Jr., 27, was transported to the emergency room at Scenic Mountain Medical Center and later transferred to Covenant Medical Center in Lubbock after he was shot numerous times at the Detail Shop  Tuesday at approximately 7 p.m.

Everett said Florez is believed to have been a customer of the local business at the time he was shot.

Officials with Covenant Medical Center in Lubbock confirmed Wednesday that Florez was under their care, but refused to provide an update on his condition. However, they did confirm that Florez was not in the hospital's intensive care unit and had been placed in a regular care room.

Garcia is described as a Hispanic male, 5 feet, 7 inches tall and 200 pounds, with numerous tattoos on his arms and chest. Martinez is also described as a Hispanic male, 5 feet, 7 inches tall and 165 pounds.

Everett said the shooting is gang-related, but declined to elaborate on what gang or gangs are believed to have been involved.

Anyone with further information regarding this crime is encouraged to contact the BSPD at 264-2550 or Big Spring Area Crimestoppers at 263-TIPS or 264-TIPS. No caller-ID is used on Crimestoppers calls, and informants may remain anonymous.
