This marks the 15th anniversary of the parade, which is estimated to last around 45 minutes. Anyone can enter and registration isn't necessary. Just show up at 9 a.m. to start lining up.
“There will be lots of tractors, vehicles, and floats. There will be bicycles, motorcycles and cycles of all kinds,” said Quail Dobbs, the chairman of the parade committee. “We're expecting about three or four floats this year.”
The parade will start in the parking lot west of the Coahoma High School football field and proceed south on N. First Street to the north service road. Everyone will then return to the stadium for the awards ceremony.
Awards will be given out in categories such as best car, best motorcycle, best antique car, best tractor and best bicycle.
Larry Truman Pherigo, Donald Bennett McKinney, and Wendell Shive are all veterans who will be acting as the parade's grand marshals. The Big Spring Police Department will serve as the color guard, and the parade's dignitaries will be Warren and Sandy Wallace, who are also the citizens of the year.
“Sandy's a music teacher, and Warren's the oldest Boy Scout in captivity. He's the head of the Boy Scouts,” said Dobbs. “They're just an outstanding couple who've helped out a lot. The two of them put out a lot of effort and have done a lot of good deeds for Coahoma.”
Dobbs also added that there's usually a good turn out. “We generally have a pretty good parade. Just come on out and be in it.”
