By Bonnie Wheat I just don’t understand everything that I read in the Bible. The book of 2 Chronicles, chapter 9 and verse 21, records that every three years King Solomon sent ships to Tarshish to bring back gold, silver, ivory, apes and peacocks. Some translations even include baboons in Solomon’s shopping list.
While I understand the value of gold, silver and ivory, and I can appreciate the beauty of having peacocks strutting across the palace lawn, I’m not so sure about having all those apes hanging around. Why a wise man like King Solomon would want a fresh boat load of apes every three years is beyond me. And what did he feed them? My Bible Dictionary doesn’t even list bananas as one of the fruits grown in Israel. I don’t know how on earth King Solomon kept all those monkeys happy and well fed. While some things about the Bible are a great mystery to me, there are other things I do understand. Jesus said to his disciples, But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I said to you. (John 14:26 NASB) I may never know what King Solomon did with all those apes, but I am confident that the Holy Spirit will teach me the things that I really need to know. |
