Fan Drive Continues At Salvation Army
Thursday, 10 July 2008
By THOMAS JENKINS
Staff Writer
Cooler temperatures over the past several days have been a blessing, according to officials with the Salvation Army, as the charity continues its annual fan drive in an effort to help area low income residents beat the summer heat.

“We have approximately 18 fans in stock right now, so we're doing much better right now,” said Paula Lafler, a social worker with the organization. “The cooler weather seems to have helped some, and we've been able to get some donations in and purchase some fans.”

The annual fan drive collects donated fans and money to purchase new fans, which are then distributed to area residents in need of help in beating the summer heat, according to Salvation Army officials.

Lafler said she knows full well the summer is far from over and it's just a matter of time before the mercury begins to rise.

“We know the drive isn't over,” said Lafler with a laugh. “The heat will be back sooner or later, and we know people are going to need these fans.

“We’re trying to target the elderly because they are the most susceptible to heat related illnesses,” said Lafler. “We’re also trying to target families with children 5-years-old and younger and who are at home through the day during the summer months.

“Donations can be made in several different ways. Donors can bring in their used fans that are in good, serviceable condition, or they can make a monetary donation. The box fans that we normally purchase usually run about $12 each, but with the rising cost of everything, it could end up being higher.”

Donations can be made by purchasing fans and taking them to the Salvation Army office — located at 811 W. Fifth St. and open from 8:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. with an hour break for lunch at noon — or earmarking monetary donations for the fan drive.

Those in need of fans can apply for assistance at the Salvation Army Office during the same hours.
