The 8th Annual Thunder in the Desert Drum Corp show takes place Wednesday at  Grande Communications Stadium in Midland. The event begins at 7 p.m. with gates opening at 5 p.m., according to Big Spring Band Director Rocky Harris.

“The show is hosted in Midland as part of a competitive tour in association with Drum Corps International (DCI). DCI Summer Music Games Tour, begins in June and culminates at the World Championship in August,” said Event Coordinator Steven Dojahn. “Thunder in the Desert is a premier event, headlining four of the top-ranking drum and bugle corps in the nation.”

The evening of entertainment features more than 800 performers from around the country. The four teams are comprised of high school and college students ranging from ages 14 to 21.

The performing corps descend upon Midland, Odessa and Big Spring Wednesday with more than  20 buses, 10 semi-trailers and numerous other trucks, campers and trailers. They will be housed at various schools throughout the Permian Basin.

One of the groups, Madison Scouts of Madison, Wis., will be accommodated in Big Spring. According to Harris, there are around 130 performers in the group and they will be staying overnight at the Big Spring High School. An open rehearsal is scheduled to take place at Blankenship Field at the high school around noon.
