Cornyn: U.S. Must Adress Energy At Home
Friday, 15 August 2008
By THOMAS JENKINS
Staff Writer
U.S. Senator John Cornyn was focused on energy Thursday afternoon during a fund-raising luncheon in Big Spring, calling on Congress to take measures he says will lower gas prices and help American become “energy independent.”

Cornyn, who made the stop in Big Spring on his way to a legislative summit in San Angelo later in the day, discussed a number of issues he says is important to the residents of the region during the luncheon, held at the Dora Roberts Community Center.

“I'm an 'all of the above' kind of guy. I think we need to be doing more in terms of conservation, as well as more drilling and production here at home,” said Cornyn. “And we need to develop new renewable fuel sources and new technologies, such as nuclear power. Unfortunately, as a result of Congress putting a lot of our domestic oil reserves out of bounds, we have about 85 percent of what we can produce here in America that Congress won't allow us to produce.

“I hope the leadership — Speaker (Nancy) Pelosi and the Majority Leader Harry Reid — will allow us an up or down vote, and I'm convinced if they do we'll find Congress will do what the American people want, and that's say we need to produce more here at home, learn how to use less and pursue alternatives.”

Cornyn, who, along with fellow senator Kay Bailey Hutchison played an active role in keeping the Big Spring VA Medical Center off the government's chopping blocks in recent years, said taking care of our veterans is another major concern for him.

“I was proud to work with the Texas congressional delegation to help keep the Big Spring VA Hospital open,” said Cornyn. “When our service members return home, we must provide them with the best health care, benefits and support.”

Cornyn will face Democratic opponent Rick Noriega in November's election.
