'Close Encounters' screening Friday at state park
Monday, 25 August 2008
Area residents who catch a glimpse of UFOs or aliens at the Big Spring State Park Friday won't have to question their sanity, as the Big Spring Film Society gets ready to present a massive outdoor showing of an Oscar winning 1977 movie about little green men.

And while it's not hard to figure just which movie the local society will be showing in hi-definition on a 16-foot inflatable screen, the group's spokesperson is mum on the matter.

“It's really kind of funny. We're allowed to promote the screening, even put the name of the film we're showing on our Web site, but we're not allowed to directly publicize it in the media,” said Brandon Johnson, society leader and spokesman. “So, while I can't necessarily tell you what the film will be here, in this interview, I can tell you to visit our Web site the information is there.”

True to his word, Johnson's Web site — www.neoarchaicrevue.com — reveals the screening will be of Steven Spielberg's classic “Close Encounters of the Third Kind,” which took home the Oscar for Best Film in 1977.

According to Johnson, the screening of the film — which is rated PG — is the perfect chance for area families to spend some time together and not only enjoy a great movie, but also the beautiful landscape of the park.

“The film's rated-PG, but it's something the entire family can enjoy,” said Johnson. “They can bring their lawn chairs and coolers full of lemonade — there's no alcoholic beverages allowed in the park — and kick back and enjoy the whole thing.”

Johnson said there's no admission charge to be part of the screening and encourages area residents to mark the date on their calendar.

“How often do you get the chance to watch a movie on a 16-feet screen on the top of a mountain?” asked Johnson.

The film is expected to begin just after dark near the playground, located adjacent to the park office on the top of Scenic Mountain.
