Sales Tax Receipts Up 33 Percent

Sales tax receipts were up a whopping 33 percent for Big Spring this month, according to the State Comptroller's office.
Big Spring received $680,541.13 this month, an increase of 33.82 percent compared to the $508,524.91 received in

August of 2007. For the month, Big Spring has received $4,003,788.47, up 10.14 percent.

Sales tax receipts fell 22.32 percent in Coahoma this month. The I-20 community received $10,849.07, down 22.32 percent compared to August 2007, when the city pulled in $13,966.70. Through August of this year, Coahoma has received $76,969.07, a figure 3l.27 percent off last year's pace.

Forsan enjoyed a strong, 40-plus increase in receipts for August 2008. Forsan received $8,299.96 this month, up 40.6 percent compared to $5,902.92 in August 2007. For the year, Forsan has received $53,101.05, a drop of 3.85 percent.

Ackerly took in $9,954.16 this month, up 95.1 percent when compared to the $5,101.38 received a year ago. For the year, Ackerly has received $54,364.23, up 56.56 percent.

Abilene received $3,441,498.39 this month, up 10.44 percent compared to the $3,115,912.88 taken in for August 2007. This year, the Key City has received $23,195,155.32, up 2.81 percent.

Andrews received $355,098.34 this month, up 22.17 percent compared to August 2007 receipts of $290,653.38. For the year, Andrews has received $2,144,323.26, up 15.74 percent.

Colorado City compiled $56,185.15 for August 2008, up 13.85 percent when compared to the $49,351.54 received in August 2007. For the year, the Mitchell County seat has taken in $379,265.83, up 5.16 percent.

Sales tax receipts were up 41.96 percent for Fort Stockton, comparing this month's collection of $319,841.29 to August 2007's receipts of $225,297.08. For 2008, Fort Stockton has received $1,929,738.17, up 39.04 percent.

Receipts increased 18.45 percent for Lamesa, comparing this month's take of $138,721.11 to last August's figure of $117,110.25. This year, the Dawson County seat has pulled in $860,507.14, up 13.62 percent.

Lubbock received $4,798,849.77 this month, an increase of 10.21 percent compared to the $4,354,112.59 received in August 2007. This year, Lubbock has received $32,858,638.61, up 5 percent.

Midland received $4,055,720.14, up 27.73 percent when compared to the $3,175,189.75 taken in for August 2007. For the year, the Tall City has received $25,411,095.83, up 12.81 percent.

Tax receipts for Odessa were up 20.16 percent, comparing August 2008 totals of $2,527,614.61 to August 2007 receipts of $2,103,434.85. For the year, Odessa has received $16,240,325.72, up 10.69 percent.

San Angelo received $1,904,946.32 this month, up 9.52 percent compared to the $1,739,314.15 brought in for August a year ago. So far for 2008, San Angelo has received $13,063,887.71, up 4.01 percent.

Martin County seat Stanton received $39,794.29 this month. That's a 23.79 percent increase over August 2007 receipts of $32,146.36. For the year, Stanton has received $244,740.58, up 38.5 percent.

Snyder took in $257,701.12 this month, up 19.6 percent compared to the $215,462.32 received in August 2007. For the year, Scurry County's largest community has received $1,829,030.28, up 22.14.

Sales tax receipts were up 17.51 percent in Sweetwater, comparing this months totals of $307,127.96 to August 2007 totals of $261,349.93. Through the first eight months of the year, the Nolan County seat has received $1,970,009.14, up 12.27 percent.

NO mayor it doesn't mean people want to stay in Big Spring and shop, it means gas is too high for people to go out of town to go shopping at their favorite stores.

How nice for Big Spring, could the increase from tax revenue be from the influx of traveling craftsmen in the area? It does seem that the prices here in Big Spring are a bit high. $10+ for two White Mochas at the coffee place in town.. Gee Starbucks is only $8.60. Or a scummy room at the less than nice hotel at $100.00 a night, especially since you can get an extremely nice suite in Witcha Falls for the same price. No wonder the Sales tax revenues are up.. Big Spring should remember that the work around here starts drying up soon and if there is no reason for companies to come back (you know, friendly people, competitive rates, etc..) they won't have the money flowing in... Just a thoughts
