Jim “The Rookie” Morris Slated As Guest Speaker At Howard College Foundation Speaker Series
Tuesday, 09 September 2008

Special to the Herald
Jim “The Rookie” Morris will be the guest speaker at the Howard College Foundation Speaker Series to be held Sept. 25 at 7 p.m. at The Dorothy Garrett Coliseum on the Howard College campus.

Morris, widely known as the high school physics teacher from Big Lake who pursued his major league baseball dreams, will be on hand to present his engaging presentation that is sure to motivate individuals of all ages.

After having hoped only for a professional baseball career, Morris found himself facing an adult world he barely recognized.  He turned away from baseball and toward the real word.

After years passed, Morris found himself in a small West Texas town teaching physics and coaching high school baseball.  He believed his purpose in life was to inspire his students and players to dream bigger dreams than their harsh surroundings and homes generally allowed.

Then came the bet…

“Mr. Morris is certain to be a high energy, motivational speaker who will present a message that we can all relate to,” said Dr. Cheryl T. Sparks, Howard College president.

“We are very excited to have someone with these strong West Texas ties come to our campus and possibly help other students or adults realize their own capabilities of achieving their dreams.”

Howard College Foundation serves as the host for the lecture series and will seek different sponsors for each lecture.

“As we bring new lectures in, we hope to develop more ‘Friends of the Series’ to allow additional businesses and individuals the opportunity to sponsor an event,” said Sparks.

The lectureis free of charge to the public. A reception will follow.

A ticket is required for admission. For more information or to obtain free tickets, call (432) 264-5161.
