BSISD Trustees Hope To Settle On Search Firm
Wednesday, 10 September 2008
By STEVE REAGAN
Staff Writer
Big Spring Independent School District trustees are expected to name a search firm to find a new superintendent when they hold their regular monthly meeting at 5:15 p.m. Thursday in the high school board room.

BSISD has been the market for a new superintendent since late June when Michael Downes submitted his resignation.

Downes, the district's chief executive since 2002, resigned citing distractions caused by an ongoing state investigation into alleged misconduct at a previous stop in his educational career. A few weeks after his resignation, trustees hired former Hereford ISD Superintendent Michael Stevens to lead the district on an interim basis.

At their Aug. 27 meeting, trustees heard presentations from two potential search groups —  the Texas Association of School Boards and the firm of Griggs and Associates — but tabled a final decision until Thursday's meeting.

Once a search firm is selected, it will likely be at least two or three months before a finalist is selected. The firm will first solicit applications — a process expected to take about six weeks — then submit a short list of candidates for personal interviews with the school board.

This will be the fourth time in the past 25 years that the school district will be in the market for a new superintendent. Of the last four chief executives, only Downes came from outside BSISD.

Also Thursday, trustees will:
• Hold a public hearing on the district's financial accountability rating.
• Hear the district's annual delinquent tax collection report.
• Consider resignations and employments.
• Consider a lease agreement with Greater Opportunities of the Permian Basin.
• Consider approval of a budget amendment for the purchase of school buses.
