The Forsan Independent School District board of trustees will consider steps to make the district more energy efficient when it holds its regular monthly meeting at 7 p.m. Monday in the administration building board room.
FISD Superintendent Randy Johnson said the Texas Legislature issued a mandate in 2007 requiring school districts to implement programs to reduce energy consumption.
To that end, trustees will consider requesting proposals from several firms to implement an energy management system, he added.
“If the board gives its approvals, we will eventually select a company to provide guidance and recommendations on how we reduce our energy costs,” Johnson said.
Forsan has already taken steps to get a handle on energy costs, starting with the implementation of a computer-controlled energy management system in 2005. Also, the district has started replacing existing light bulbs with a more efficient brand, Johnson said.
“I think we're in pretty decent shape now,” he said. “But the goal of this mandate from the state is to save districts money and for them to be as green and responsible as possible.”
Johnson said any changes recommended by an outside firm will take several months to fully implement.
Also Monday, trustees will hear a report on the district's Texas Primary Reading Inventory program.
Johnson said TPRI was instituted by the state to identify any reading problems among students in grades kindergarten through 2.
“It shows how many students at each grade level are in need of some kind of remedial aid,” he said. “Students are not retained based on this .... it's just an early indicator to show us if any students need some kind of special instruction.”
