Although the public may join the organization at any time, membership drives are slated to begin at 6:30 p.m each day at area schools. The first sign up will be held at Goliad Intermediate School Thursday.
Registration continues Monday — also at 6:30 p.m. — evening at Kentwood Elementary, Coahoma Elementary and Elbow Elementary in Forsan. Tuesday sign ups are being held at Marcy Elementary.
Monday, Sept. 29, the drives are scheduled at Bauer and Moss Elementaries. The final sign ups are Tuesday, Sept. 30, at Washington Elementary.
According to David O'Neill, field director for the BSA Buffalo Trail Council, participation in the organization is an excellent way to instill values in young men as well as provide them with positive activities and social outlets.
“Participating in the Scouts is a good way to build character,” said O'Neill. “Outdoor activities and events are always being planned at several Boy Scout campgrounds in the area.”
The local BSA chapter is one of the oldest troops west of the Mississippi River and is approaching its 100th anniversary. The Buffalo Trail Council is the body which governs BSA troops in 18 counties in West Texas. Encompassing about 5,100 area youth spread out among 514 packs, the council has produced 37 Eagle Scouts and performed more than 10,000 hours of community service within its jurisdiction.
Adult volunteers are also being sought for the duration of the membership drive. Those interested in becoming a part of the tradition may contact the BSA office at 263-3407.
