Susan Bowers, director of Veterans Integrated Service Network 18, announced that Daniel Marsh has been appointed director of the West Texas VA Health Care System, which includes the local medical center and its outlying service area.

Marsh succeeds Michael Bell, who resigned as WTVAHCS director in February. Dr. Chris Bacorn has been acting director of the medical center since that time.

His appointment is effective Nov. 23 and he is expected to arrive in Big Spring by Dec. 1, officials said.

Marsh began his VA career in 1973 as an accountant trainee at the Little Rock, Ark., VAMC and has progressed through positions as chief financial officer, regional finance manager and medical center director at Hot Springs, S.D.

In all, he served in nine medical centers before accepting a position in the VA Central Office in 1995. Since 2006, he has been acting director for business operations at the Washington D.C. central office.

“We're proud to announce Mr. Marsh's appointment,” Bower said in a statement. “He has a wealth of experience in every aspect of veteran's health administration and is committed to providing excellent health care to our veterans.”

He has been involved with several programs that have modernized health care operations and bookkeeping procedures, including implementing the Computerized Patient Record System, now referred to as the Electronic Health Record, and establishing the Bar Code Medication Administration's national program office, the statement noted.

Marsh, a U.S. Air Force veteran, received his bachelor's degree from Northeastern State University in Oklahoma and his master's degree with a specialization in health care administration from Maryville University.

He is a member of the American College of Health Care Executives.
