The open house and coffee will be from 7:30 a.m. to 9 a.m. Tours of the new patient area will be given by hospital employees during the open house.
The hospital’s Volunteer Services Council funded the project through various fund-raisers and sales at The Chalet Resale Shop. More than $50,000 was donated for building materials: plant management staff and patients constructed the waterfall, butterfly garden, and covered area.
Patients even had a hand in naming the area, ATD Director Lorie Couch said.
Possible names were submitted by employees and patients with the final result determined by patient vote.
“The walking track is named Recovery Road and the waterfall area is The Meditation Garden,” she said.
“We are proud of the area and want to take this opportunity to show it to members of the community and to publicly thank our Volunteer Services Council,” Big Spring State Hospital Superintendent Ed Moughon said.
An assortment of breakfast items, including coffee, hot tea, juice, bottled water, fruit, and assorted pastries will be served.
Big Spring State Hospital is a 200-bed psychiatric hospital for people in 57 counties in West Texas and the Texas Panhandle.
