Lady Buffs claim area series with 5-4 win
Monday, 07 May 2007

SNYDER — Forsan’s Lady Buffaloes got off to a slow start for the second consecutive game against Ralls’ Lady Jackrabbits, as Ralls got three runs across the plate thanks to three Lady Buffs’ fielding errors.

However, the Lady Buffs would calm down after the first inning, allowing Ralls to score just one more run, as they laid claim to a 5-4 win in Game 2 of the best-of-three series, eliminating the 20th-ranked Lady Jackrabbits.

Forsan’s season record improved to 15-10.

The Lady Buffs overcame a disastrous first inning much like they did in Game 1. It was a home run by Shelby Jones in the second inning of the first game that sparked a Forsan rally.

In Game 2, it was Jones’ twin sister Kelsey that led the Forsan rally. Her single in the fourth inning scored starting pitcher Amanda Longorio to give the Lady Buffs their first run.

Kelsey Jones would trim the Lady Jackrabbits’ margin to 3-2 after scoring due to an error by the Ralls’ second baseman.

The Jones sisters both walked then scored in the fifth inning when Alyx Pappajohn doubled to give the Lady Buffs’ their first lead of the afternoon 4-3.

Ralls’ would manage to tie the score in the top of the seventh inning after Forsan had more troubles in the field. The Lady Buffs helped Ralls get across the plate after committing two errors and a wild pitch.

With the game tied 4-4, Shelby Jones singled to left to lead off the bottom of the seventh inning. She was able to reach second after a throwing error by the left fielder.

Macy Briggs moved Shelby to third, after laying down a solid bunt.

Longorio clinched the game and the series for the Lady Buffs when she hit a tricky grounder to second that allowed Shelby to score the game-winning run.

Pappajohn relieved Longorio on the mound in the second inning. She pitched the last six innings of the game, giving up only one unearned run. Pappajohn was able to keep the Ralls’ batters off-balance with a nice mix of fastballs and change-ups.

The Lady Buffs will now prepare for a Class 1A regional quarterfinals match-up against Trent’s Lady Gorillas. The time, location and date of that series has not yet been determined.
