Few Candidates File For ISD Elections
Monday, 16 February 2009
By STEVE REAGAN

A sprinkling of area school board candidates have thrown their hats into the ring, officials said.

Although several area districts have yet to officially call for the May 9 elections, candidates can file at any time up until March 9.

School districts in Big Spring, Coahoma, Forsan, Stanton and Sands will hold trustee elections May 9. Glasscock County and Grady school districts hold their trustee elections at a later time, while Howard College will not have trustee elections this year.

In Big Spring, seats currently held by Maria Padilla (District 2) and Tony Kennedy (District 4) are up for election this year. Both Padilla and Kennedy have filed their candidacies but no challengers have emerged as yet, Business Manager Debra Green said.

Both positions are for three years.

Candidates may file at the BSISD business office located across the street from the high school on 11th Place during normal business hours, Green noted.

Coahoma ISD will elect three trustees this year, officials noted. At-large positions currently held by Jody Reid, Allen Wright and Kirk Allen will be decided this year.

As of Friday, no one had filed for the election, said Judy Dobbs, superintendent's secretary for the district. Filings will be accepted at the CISD administration office adjacent to the high school.

At-large positions held by Lewis Boeker and Misty Rhoten will be decided this year at Forsan ISD. As of Friday afternoon, Boeker was the only candidate to have filed for election, said Judy Park, administration secretary for the district.

Candidates may file at the superintendent's office in the high school/junior high building, Park added.

Stanton ISD Superintendent David Carr said three positions on the SISD board are up for election this year — the District 2 seat currently held by Ramiro Reyes and two at-large positions held by James “Pinky” Jones and Reggie Franklin, respectively.

Both Reyes and Jones have filed for re-election, Carr said. Filings will be accepted during normal business hours at the administration office at 200 N. College St. in Stanton.

Sands CISD voters will elect three trustees this May, Superintendent Wayne Blount said. At-large positions currently held by Amy Parker, Steve Blagrave and Tommy Staggs will be decided.

The race has attracted two challengers — Wes Hughes and Nate Avey — but none of the incumbents had filed as of Friday afternoon, Blount said.
