Beil, who has contributed untold amounts of time and energy to a variety of local causes, was honored with a special program at Tuesday's meeting of the Big Spring Rotary Club.
His fellow Rotarians saluted Beil for his accomplishments during his more than 40 years of membership, including serving as a local, district and international officer for the organization.
But it wasn't just Beil's service to Rotary that was recognized Tuesday.
“This is indeed the longest proclamation I've ever read,” Big Spring Mayor Russ McEwen said in declaring Tuesday as Charles Beil Appreciating Day in Big Spring. “And the reason it's so long, Charles, is that you've done so much for this community.
“We will be eternally grateful for not only all you've done, but the way you've done it,” McEwen added.
Since moving to Big Spring in 1962, Beil has served in a variety of governmental and civic organizations, including the Jaycees (he helped organize the first Rattlesnake Roundup in Big Spring), the Chamber of Commerce, Big Spring Independent School District Board of Trustees, Big Spring City Council, Moore Board, United Way, Big Spring Concert Series and the Big Spring Area Community Foundation.
His accomplishments as a Rotarian mirror his efforts in the community — he has served as president of the local club as well as District Governor. Another indication of his devotion to the club is his 41 years of perfect attendance.
Brad Bunn of Midland, the current district governor, attended Tuesday's ceremony to present Beil with a certificate of appreciation.
“It's humbling to be the current district governor ... but it is a great thing to be standing on the shoulders of the previous governors who, like Charles, have done so much for Rotary.”
